Listed below are the number of incidents that were reported to the University Police for the past week, starting Monday, May 13th, 2013 to Sunday, May 19th, 2013. The list includes the locations of the specified incidents. 2 Assaults
Location(s): 8600 Boteler Lane, 8000 Boteler Lane
Synopsis (8600): Officer responded to 8600 Boteler Lane for a report of a roommate dispute. Upon arrival, the officer met with the reporting person who stated that around October of last year, she had engaged in a verbal argument with her roommate over some property. During this argument, the reporting person’s roommate struck her in the throat, causing her to fall down. This incident was not originally reported. For this particular incident, the reporting person stated that her roommate had once again threatened her, and she was afraid that she would be assaulted, again.
Synopsis (8000): Officer responded to 8000 Boteler Lane for a report of an assault. Upon arrival, the officer met with the reporting person who stated that while he was driving a Shuttle UM bus and dropping off passengers, one of the passengers requested that he drop her off at another location, as she was not happy with the current stop. The victim told the passenger that she would have to call or wait for another bus. At this time, the passenger struck the victim in the face, and then exited the bus. Case Pending.

Location: 84 Campus Drive
Synopsis: Officer responded to the Mathematics building for a report of burglary. Upon arrival, the officer met with the reporting person, who stated that the master key for the mathematics building had been taken from her desk. Additionally, the officer was told that approximately 150 final exams had been taken from one of the Teaching Assistant’s offices. Case Pending.

1 Indecent Exposure
Location: McKeldin Mall
Synopsis: Officer responded to McKeldin Mall for a noise complaint. Upon arrival, the officer noticed about 60 individuals in the fountain at McKeldin Mall. The officer identified himself and told everyone to get out of the fountain. As this was happening, the officer observed one man get out of the fountain and remove his underwear, exposing his genital area. After this happened, the individual quickly put his shorts back on. The officer confronted the individual who stated that he was only trying to get out of his wet clothes. All individuals were then instructed to leave the area, immediately.

Female Student Found Deceased in Kent Hall
On 05/06/2013 at approximately 1:15 P.M., the University of Maryland Police Department was made aware of a student who was unresponsive in Kent Hall. When officers arrived, it was determined that the female student was deceased. University of Maryland Detectives are currently investigating this incident and at this time, there is no indication of foul play or a suicide attempt. The unfortunate death appears to be the result of an accident.
The family was notified shortly after the student was declared deceased by Maryland State Police. At this time, we will not be releasing the name pending a more in-depth discussion of the incident with the deceased's parents which will take place later today (5/7/13).
ADDITIONAL:
The name of the deceased is Sarah Hancock, a 20 year old student from Bel Air, MD. The cause of death will be determined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Baltimore, MD. This is all the information available to the department at this time and no further information will be available until OCME has released its findings.

Listed below is the number of incidents that were reported to the University Police for the past week, starting on Monday, April 22nd, 2013 to Sunday, April 28th, 2013. The list includes the locations of the specified incidents. 1 Assault
Location: 3 Rossborough Lane
Synopsis: Officer responded to Rossbourough Lane for a report of an assault that has taken place earlier. Upon arrival, the officer met with the reporting person who stated that he and some friends were in the radio room of South Campus Dining Hall when an intoxicated acquaintance of theirs entered the room. At this time, taunting occurred between the acquaintance and the reporting person, which then escalated into an altercation, in which punches were thrown. This altercation was broken up by other people in the room and both parties went their separate ways.
1 Burglary
Location: 3212 South Commons 3
Synopsis: Officer responded to South Commons 3 for a report of a burglary. Upon arrival, the officer met with the victim who stated that she left her apartment around midday, but did not lock her door. When the victim returned in the evening, she noticed that several items in her room had been moved, and that one of her dresses had been stolen. During this interview, the victim’s roommate and a friend of the roommate were present in the apartment. During the course of the interview, information was presented that led the officer to question the roommate’s friend, who admitted to stealing the dress. Case closed.

Location: 34 Library Lane
Synopsis: Officer responded to Jimenez Hall for a report of fraud. Upon arrival, the officer met with the victim who stated that she had lost her Chevy Chase Visa Card the day before, but did not realize that the card was missing until the next day. The victim stated that she had called the bank to cancel the card to prevent anyone from using it. It was at this time that the bank informed her that her card had been used at the Maryland Book Store. The victim stated that she did not use the card at the Maryland Book Store, prompting the officer to access the security footage from the Maryland Book Store. Case is pending.

Location: 35 Library Lane
Synopsis: Officers responded to McKeldin library for a report of a suspicious statement. Upon arrival, the officers met with the reporting person who stated that a woman had approached her at the front desk, and provided a non-specific statement that contained alarming language. Upon telling her supervisor, the reporting individual then called and reported the incident to UMPD. As a result of the statement, the library was evacuated and individuals were not allowed to enter the building. K9 officers arrived on scene and performed a search of the building, which returned negative results.

Synopsis: Officer was stationary at Hornbake Plaza, when he noticed a white male, carrying an orange construction sign. The officer approached the individual and identified himself as a police officer. The individual explained that at approximately 0400 hours, his friends gave him the sign, which was taken from the construction site near Commons 1 & 2. The sign was confiscated and returned to its rightful place, by the officer. Case closed.

2 Vandalism Incidents
Location(s): 4230 Knox Road, 259 Farm Drive
Synopsis (Knox Road): Officer responded to abovementioned location for a report of vandalism. Upon arrival the officer met with the reporting person who stated that while he was conducting a walkthrough of the building, he noticed a hole in the wall between 2 of the rooms. The damage was caused by unknown sources, and there were no witnesses to the damage. Case pending.
Synopsis (Farm Drive): Officer responded to Laplata Hall for a report of vandalism. Upon arrival, the officer met with the reporting person who stated that at some point the previous night, 4 window panes had been broken from the window of one of the rooms. As a result, the screen to the window was also damaged. There were no signs that anyone had gained access to the room, as the newly created openings were too small for a person to fit through. Case is pending.

UMPD Drug Take Back Yields 75lbs of Medication
The University of Maryland Police participated in its’ sixth annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which took place during Maryland day (April 27, 2013). UMPD was able to collect 5 bags which weighed in at 75 pounds of expired or unused medication. These events go a long way to remove medication from circulation and prevent them from contaminating landfills or water systems.
